San Teodoro: Tampisaw sa Tamaraw Falls!
Found between the towns of Calapan, San Teodoro and Puerto Galera lies a natural wonder named Tamaraw Falls. What’s great to the falls is that you don’t need to trek just to be there; its beauty can be already seen from the highway.
From Calapan, we rode the zigzag road to Puerto Galera. Our original destination is a well-known beach. But because of the rainy season and limited time, one of our travel companions suggested going to the said falls instead.
After a 45-minute travel at the mountainous northern part of Mindoro, we finally arrived on Tamaraw Falls. We’re in awe as we saw the cascading waterfalls with the height of 423 ft. (128.3 m.).
It was named after a water buffalo which is endemic only at the Mindoro Island. According to the elderly folk, it was the commonplace of a herd of tamaraws. Due to the tourism and commercialization, they’re now endangered and only few can be spotted today.
We felt refreshed as we check out the falls’ cool and clean waters. Oh, forgot to mention that there’s an entrance fee of P25 per person. There are cottages and picnic huts for rental. Also available is a man-made pool which is connected to the base of the falls. You can also enjoy a spa-like experience on its spillway wherein the water pressure is great for back-massaging. Just be careful in positioning since the rocks there are slippery.
A great falls deserves a great view. It’s facing a mountain range which is soothing to the eyes and soul as its waters to the body. A nature-lover will definitely fall in love more as the chirp of birds can be heard in the background.
That day was our lucky day as there are no visitors other than us. Though it’s given that this is better enjoyed during summer, we still prefer going to a falls after a rainy day since we enjoy huge drops of water (of course, not after a thunderstorm as most likely it will be a brown, muddy experience).
From Calapan, travel the road going to Puerto Galera. This falls can be spotted easily since it’s just near the highway. Travel time is around 45 minutes.
From Puerto Galera:
Traverse the way to Calapan. Expect a 45-minute travel as same as from Calapan.
From Puerta Galera, ride a jeep or van via Calapan (or vice-versa) and tell the driver to drop you to Tamaraw Falls.
You may also rent a tricycle going to the falls. It’s a better option for those who like a more flexible time as you can tell the driver to do a stopover at other great places along the way.
